A Great Release!

We have to write to say a big THANK YOU to all of our supporters! Maya 2011 released this past Friday at our Book Release Open Mic during the Week of Writing and we nearly had a full house of attendees to grab a new Maya, participate and listen to our readers! Maya cannot exist without all of the people who contribute their work and support us in so many ways from donating directly to us to buying our cupcakes at bake sales and even just picking up a copy to read, establishing our purpose in the community.

Our last event of the year will be our Finals Week Cupcake Bake Sale.  As always, we’ll be making delectable, homemade cupcakes in unique and tasty flavors, each to be decorated in its own special way. I can guarantee there will be red velvet and funfetti, along with other fantastic flavors and combinations!  We’ll be in Bookmark Cafe in Hagerty Library on Monday, June 6th from 7:00-10:00 p.m. Due to the popularity at our last bake sale, we will be giving away a baked good (pie, cake, etc – to-be-determined) to the lucky winner who picks out the cupcake with a special Maya symbol underneath their wrapper! See you there!

Goodbye, Sam!

The staff of Maya would like to congratulate staff member and Outreach Coordinator Samuel Gean on his graduation from Drexel. We will miss Sam tremendously at our meetings and events. He was never afraid to speak out in defense of a piece he felt strongly about. He was also just a generally fun person to have at meetings—providing the ‘za and calming any tensions that arose with a joke. At events, Sam was an outgoing, friendly presence who always made newcomers feel comfortable. He hosted our Haiku-Off and some of our open mics, which were greatly enriched by his voice. Sam also stepped up and became Maya’s Outreach Coordinator because of his role with our Mighty Writer’s workshop community service project. The project would never have happened if he did not give it so much of his time and energy.

Sam, we will miss you! Best of luck with all you do. We know you will accomplish great things!

Maya is on IndieGogo!

You may have recently heard from our website, Facebook or at Haiku-Off that Maya was robbed of its fundraising money from the past 2 years.  Our goal for Maya 2011 remains the same- to publish a full color issue!

We’ve set a goal to raise $2000 on IndieGogo (a donation site) to be able to publish Maya this year and you can help us!  Visit http://igg.me/p/17645?a=80936&i=shlk to see Maya’s campaign page and donate to our campaign.  You can find more information here about exact costs of printing and what we need to raise.  Even a donation of $1 is appreciated by our staff!  Help make Maya the best it can be in 2011- please share this with your friends, family and anyone who would be interested in helping our magazine!  Thank you for your support!

Wipe Away My Eyes

Wipe Away My Eyes

Tell me,
do you remember–or
can’t you remember…
Who you were? And,
are you now
Who you were?
I am not!

We are so very, very young
and so equally naive.
Everything in perfect order

Please, take away my senses
they have grown obsolete–
useless,
from lack of use.

-Mark Robinson, Maya 1983
