Submit your art, photography, and creative writing by February 23rd for Maya 2010! Email submissions to dsomaya@drexel.edu
OMG another “Haiku Off”!?!
Maya, Drexel’s undergrad literary magazine, is hosting a follow-up to our hugely successful “Haiku Off” and it will be co-hosted by the Drexel Players.
Winning haikuists will win fame and notoriety, and the winning haikus will be published in our 2010 issue.
The logistics of the “Haiku Off” are as follows: There will be three rounds during which contestants may write one poem a piece. Each round will be themed (top secret until the day of the event!) and contestants will have 10 minutes to scribe their haiku masterpiece. After 10 minutes, haikus will be collected and read aloud, identified by number (thus the reading is blind to avoid bias). A panel of judges will then pick their favorite haiku and the winners will be revealed! There will be a 10-minute break between rounds.
Maya will be holding the event at Ross Commons (2nd Floor), February 10th, at 7:00pm. Free Food and Beverages!
Maya will also be announcing and rewarding the winners of our 2nd annual writing contest.

Maya will also be promoting our 2nd annual “Hiaku-Off” (Wooo!) which will be held on February 10th, 2nd floor of Ross Commons, at 7:00pm. Maya will announce our writing contest winners during our “Haiku-Off”.

Maya, Drexel’s undergraduate literary magazine, is holding its 2nd Annual Fall Term Writing Contest! Submit your writing in any of three categories: Poetry, Fiction and Nonfiction. All undergraduates are welcome to submit as many pieces in one or all categories as they would like. First place in each category wins cash prize and possible publication in Press 1, literary arts journal. First, second and third places will receive automatic publication in the 2010 Maya issue. This is a great way to build your resume, and there is no fee to submit!
The deadline to submit your writing is December 1, 2009. Winners will be announced December 13, 2009. To submit or for more information, email your entry or entries to dsomaya@drexel.edu before December 1! Submissions will be read blind and voted on democratically by Maya staff members (staff members are not allowed to compete).

On October 9th 2009, Jordan Schilling (editor-in-chief) represented Maya at the ‘09 Mid-Atlantic Student Magazine Conference held at Ocean College, NJ. Jordan gave a presentation on his research in media/publications as pedagogical tools in higher education. His work on Maya, Painted Bride Quarterly, and Drexel Publishing Group inspired this research project.

Sean Thomas Dougherty, the best selling author of eight books of poetry, will be reading at Drexel on Wednesday, October 21, 2009. This event will be held in the Bossone Auditorium at 11:00am. Dougherty will also sign books after the reception. Maya will be attending this event and we encourage everyone to come. For more information, please contact Harriet Millan at millanhl@drexel.edu.

Maya is pleased to announce that Jordan Schilling, our editor-in-chief and fearless leader, was invited to this year’s Mid-Atlantic Student Magazine Conference on October 9th. Schilling will be presenting a lecture on the use of media/publications as pedagogical tools in higher education. This marks Maya’s first attendance at a major conference since…probably the 1980s.
The Mid-Atlantic Student Magazine Conference is held every fall to bring together college student magazine editors, writers, artists, and faculty advisors from the mid-Atlantic region. This event is centered on a series of editorial workshops, student lectures, and guest speakers to present new research on undergraduate publishing. Student editors and writers from The Community College of Philadelphia, Temple University, and University of Pennsylvania will also be in attendance.
