Events

From Maya’s frequent open mics to Painted Bride Quarterly’s monthly poetry readings at the Bubble House, the Publishing Group hosts events throughout the year to promote our various publications.

Last spring PBQ hosted “Temptation,” an event promoting the release of Issue #77, in which all the writing was temptation themed. The event was a panel discussion with various experts on temptation, including a pastry chef, a burlesque dancer, a former drug dealer, and a minister. Recently, Maya hosted its first “Haiku-Off,” in which contestants anonymously wrote and submitted their haikus to be judged. The winners will be published in the upcoming edition of Maya.

Week of Writing

The 2009 Week of Writing will take place Monday, May 11 – Friday, May 15. View the complete schedule for WoW 2009.

Drexel’s Department of English and Philosophy recognizes superb writing by students and faculty during its annual Week of Writing (WoW) each May. Since its inception four years ago, the mainstay of WoW has been the two-day Reading Marathon. Over these days, students who won the writing contest in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, humor, and editorial read their work alongside Drexel faculty authors.

Last year, WoW also hosted several panel discussions featuring local writers discussing subjects ranging from performance writing to modern poetry to blogging.   Maya, Drexel’s rejuvenated undergraduate literary magazine, held a raucous open-mic event.

WoW 2009 promises to be an even grander celebration of writing excellence, with the addition of a speed-editing session and book fair. Panel discussions will cover writing about food, adaptations and alternatives to the traditional novel, careers in writing, and the benefits of journal writing. The open-mic event will once again be hosted by Maya.
