In late July, another blogger here at DPG, Carolynn, talked about the dependency on “spellckeck” and how it could contribute to a more illiterate society. It seems that there are some people who might benefit from taking the time to proofread their work before creating a final copy; mainly road workers painting words onto the streets of our country.
Ironically, the word that seems to be plaguing workers is “school,” the very institution which should be instilling correct spelling in the first place. Now, I am not saying these public typos are the fault of inadequate teachers; the blame is solely garnered by the workers involved. This article shows that word spelled “shcool” on a freshly paved road in North Carolina. There are also several links incorporated to this article which show the same error being made on roads all around the country.
For something as permanent as painted words on a street which signify a school zone, and the fact that the impressionable students will be seeing the word on a daily basis, you would think that extra care would be taken to ensure the proper spelling. You can’t hit backspace after painting s-c-o-h-o-l on the road. Perhaps the workers thought gallons of white paint could serve as white-out? One thing is for sure, these imbarassing misteaks need to sotp!

Nice post, Dan.
This was just on NPR the other day:

Two friends traveled the country fixing all the grammatically misspelled words they could find.
Well…I misspelled “school” until about fifth grade or so and so, I can relate to a certain extent… but, “SOTP,” really? Now, that’s just plain stupidity and/or the refusal to proofread.
Have you seen this?!
