More than just a game

I was fortunate enough to be in Philadelphia the last time the Phillies were won the world series, and I must say, the scenes of celebration that followed showed me the true depth of feeling that the residents of Philly have for their sports club.

For a moment, a few days in this case, race, social status and religion were set aside. For a few days, it was simply enough to say that one was a Phillies fan and you were welcomed into whatever pub, restaurant or hangout spot you happened to pop into. It was truly one of the most incredible experiences I have had in my short time in the United States.  It got me thinking about the potential sport has to bring people together irrespective of their background.

I say all this in continuation of my running theme of the interaction between soccer and society in my home country. This is a wonderful article by a Ms Namulondo along the same lines. I hope you enjoy it.
