I am behind the curve when it comes to reading the “classic” novels that every one is supposed to read. In my current English class, I finally read two such books- George Orwell’s 1984 and Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle. Both books mock humanity, satirizing the eventual downfall of society through ignorance, destructive weapons, and oppressive government control. And while they are great to read, their eerie accuracy to current world conditions leaves me feeling less than upbeat about the future of this smog-covered, terrorist-filled, poverty-stricken, war-hungry world we live in.
And if that isn’t enough to bring you down, then surely you must be nauseous trying to keep track of all the initiatives evolving in a last-ditch effort to reshape the world. You can “go green” by purchasing an electric car… from the same companies that still produce gas-guzzling SUVs. Vote for the Tea Party because they can improve the government. Say no to drugs, but legalize marijuana. Only buy organic food, even though it has no proven benefits. Make tougher immigration laws, unless it affects cheap labor that can “stimulate” the economy. Gay rights. Equal rights. Public versus private schools. Affirmative action. Birth control. Abortion. The Catholic Church. Global warming. The Global War on Terrorism. It’s all a joke.
Let’s face it, the world is already in the toilet. The handle has already been pressed. Everything is swirling and heading for the drain. All we are doing now is frantically throwing extra junk in the bowl in the hopes of creating a clog to delay the flushing action. But that just causes the sewage to overflow, creating an even larger mess. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but we are beyond the point of no return. All we can do now is delay the inevitable. So force a smile guys, and go pick up your boyfriend in your brand new Prius and take him to eat organic chicken while you discuss government reform.
