Today I ventured into Avril 50, an eclectic magazine shop on Sansom Street between 34th and 35th. Every person should visit this shop! It was built by the owner, John, who literally put it together with his two hands 27 years ago. Upon entering, five pots of steaming coffee are brewing, inviting you for a taste. One of them is label “Avril 50 Blend.” I asked John what was in it, and he promptly told me that he told me, he’s have to kill me—just kidding, but he really didn’t tell me. He came up with the brew after two years of experimenting, and it’s known as the house favorite.
The magazines are all hand selected by John, some Japanese Vogue, a little Architectural Record. I could have easily spent an entire day just walking around the two narrow aisles filled top to bottom with chronicle after chronicle. Stacks of postcards that promote women’s rights and degrade former President Bush split the two aisles.
John mentioned that all types of people visit his shop on any given day. Out-of-towners seems to make a point of visiting frequently. For anyone who lives in Philadelphia, I’d have to say, clear out a couple hours and go down to Avril 50.

Avril 50 is awesome! They have a huge selection of international literary journals and magazines. And they are two steps away from the Penn Book Center (NOT to be confused with the Barnes & Noble Penn Book Store), which is probably the best store on campus for new books.
