Honorable Mention

I can’t really remember the last time I wrote a biography; probably sometime around middle school. It was always interesting to learn about a person of the past that had contributed something great that changed society, but biographies were never my favorite kinds of pieces to write. But I now feel inspired to write one about a person who I have known all 17 years of his life.

I can honestly say that my brother is one extraordinary kid. He displays more drive and passion towards everything in his life than anyone I’ve ever met. Of all of the things he loves in his life, running takes the number one spot. He has recently taken his love of running and has put it to a charitable use and is in the process of putting together a 5k over in my South Jersey home.

The 5k run is in support of Haiti, and all proceeds and donations will go directly to support relief of the people who have been struck by the disastrous earthquake in Haiti. My brother thought of the idea immediately following the detrimental news and has been collaborating with his friends and with my parents to develop this 5k. I’ll never forget seeing him in at home office one evening after dinner looking on a website that explained how to organize and run a 5k. Just seeing him take the very first step towards his wonderful idea made me believe in him and feel hopeful that his 5k would actually happen.

Yesterday night my Dad gave me a call to tell me that Stephen had spoken to the mayor of our town at a meeting that he and his friends had set up themselves. The meeting with the mayor was successful and Stephen’s 5k will happen on March 28 at our hometown’s only park.

I’m very proud of my brother’s accomplishments and his determination in organizing this 5k. To turn a dream into something real is just an incredible feat, and I give him so much credit and praise. If you are interested in attending the 5k to support Haiti, please feel free to join the Facebook group for more information about the race’s location and other pertinent details.
