5 Things to Look For in Every Drexel Daily Digest

So you haven’t opened up your email account in a week. Not a big deal, right? There will be some emails from friends on Co-op, maybe a electronic flyer from Staples with a sale on 500 ct. packs of Bic pens, and possibly a long winded monologue about your studies, or lack of such, from mom. Oh, and about a dozen or more Drexel Daily Digests. Most people consider the daily mailing a spamming of our accounts, or just take notice of it long enough to delete the message without opening it. This decision, to but it bluntly, is a bad idea. The digest is a list of announcements for the benefit of the Drexel student population, not just a long boring newsletter. My proof? Here are 5 common (and awesome) things you should look for in the digest:

1. Free Food

Now that I’ve got your attention, you’d be happy to know that in the digest there are opportunities to eat for free. The digest promotes events like this, especially if an RSVP is required. My personal favorites are the nutritional science presentations about cheap healthy eating at college which provide a meal of the dishes they mentioned during the presentation, and the CoAS D3: Dinner, Discussion, and Drexel series that features a speaker from a variety of topics, with a full buffet.

2. Student Groups

With over 250 student groups on campus, at some point you run across them. Many student group events that may interest you are listed in the digest, usually a week or so in advance to allow you time to schedule them in. Also, if a student group in the digest catches your interest, the Office of Campus Activities has a full listing of contact information.

3. Free Events

The only days where it is uncommon for free events to occur on campus are during university holidays, and even then there still might an event. Sporting events, jam sessions, speaker series, free movies, you name it and it’s been done many times over. My suggestions are the International Area Studies speaker series, which not only has some of the best conversation and presentation, but some of the best free food as well, and the Free Movie Screening nights on Wednesdays that are run through the Campus Activities Board.

4. Competitions

For the competitive few of you out there, there are competitions on campus all the time. In the last few digests there has been promotions for a comedy competition through CAB, and whoever wins will open for the Reno 911 act at the 10th Annual Comedy Show. In the past there have also been Mural competitions and cooking competitions for Barbecue and Chili cook offs.

5. Campus Announcements

Yeah, this one may be a little boring, but it can save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Many deadlines for sign-ups and applications are put into the digest as announcements. Recently the digest announced that the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA) was accepting applications for open positions, the beginning and recruitment for club sports teams, and the Fraternity and Sorority Life schedule of events for each term.

So if you’re reading this and have already deleted that email that could be chock full of entertaining and free things, don’t panic. They archive the digest daily for your use at http://www.drexel.edu/news/live.aspx
