The Future of the Publishing Industry

A couple weeks ago I read an article about the apparent demise of the publishing industry that is either already happening, or is eminent. The article, “Can Apple Save the Publishing Industry” , deals with how the actual material the industry puts out (books, newspaper, magazines, etc) are becoming virtually extinct due to their electronic counterparts. Like many, the author sees this not as a dooming fact, but rather an opportunity for the publishing industry to capitalize on technology like the iPhone and all its wonderful apps (which include newspapers and books). Still, it seems as though while the industry will still be alive, many of the people working in it may not. (See the layoff stories all over the place, ex: Men’s Journal Layoffs)
